Would you like to be given more opportunity and be taken more seriously?
While we may be brilliant at our work, that is not enough to be welcomed into prestigious, important, and exciting projects.
Being brilliant at our technical work is not enough to ensure others seek our ideas as well as our technical expertise.
Do you ever wonder why your ideas don’t carry far enough up the organisation or you don’t seem to be considered for leading important initiatives?
It’s unlikely to be because your ideas aren’t good enough. It’s certainly not because you are not clever enough.
Perhaps it’s because you don’t have the right positioning in the business.
Perhaps you’re not considered as a strategic or tactical adviser, but as a skilled technician to be wheeled in and out as necessary.
If you’d like to make a greater contribution to decision-making and to be more in control of what that contribution is, take a look at how you behave and what your ‘currency’ is.
If you trade-in information, you’ll be considered a source of information. If you trade in ideas or strategy, that’s how others will engage with you.
So what do your conversations consist of? What do your documents lead with? What’s the language you speak?
And how would you articulate your purpose to the organisation?
If you want the organisation to deal with you as a technician – then stay technical, but if you want the business to regard you as a business advisor, consider all your touchpoints and amend not just what you contribute but how you do so.
And ensure you reinforce your advisor positioning.
Would you like a structure and some guidance so you can keep your marketing going and suffer fewer revenue troughs?
