The Sad Story of Mick Jagger and Freddie Mercury

Both superstars tried new ventures and returned finding there’s no place like home. Was it vanity? Disloyalty? Greed that lead them astray?

Thank goodness they were able to come home and lick their wounds.

When we’re comfortable or successful we often take it for granted. Pride comes before a fall, my mother always said.

The 4th of Christopher Booker’s 7 narratives is Voyage and Return.

Unlike the story of The Quest where the experience is positive and the journey is enriching, we are tempted away from what we know is good, only to be disillusioned.

It’s the ultimate ‘grass is always greener’ story. In business, you could use it to show how, despite appearances, the team/brand/strategy is better staying on the current path and that it’s foolishness or impatience that is leading us to press for change.

This story can be used as a warning against unwise decisions or as a way of explaining a mistake that must not be repeated.

Or simply as a way of saying ‘there’s no place like home’, let’s appreciate it.

History is littered with companies which reached great heights and thought they were impervious to risk. Only to find they were mistaken. What’s your example?
