This is a picture of me about to perform with my enthusiastic 500-strong non-audition choir.
The choir I BELONG to creates the most wonderful sound and being inside it as it sings is overwhelming. I am insignificant in this choir – it could perform just as well without me. And yet when I am singing in harmony and unison, and creating the overall effect, I am swept up by the whole.
On Friday evening we performed on the steps of the Sydney Opera House. It was truly AWE-some. It was an existential experience being an insignificant part of something so powerful and magnificent.
In this environment, you lose your sense of self in service to the whole. You are part of one huge beast of magnificent sound. The singing comes from every cell in your body. You are surrendered to the music and the living thing you are a part of.
This is the power of AWE. To be nothing and part of something powerful. To have meaning from being part of a power that transforms everything it touches.
The joy of the audience, the singers, the conductors was tangible – I really felt it had turned into something you could touch, smell, and breathe. Even the seagulls seemed to swoop and soar on the notes we sang.
