How You can Change your Environment to Boost your Results

A couple of weeks ago I introduced you to the Achievement Accelerator Toolkit.
This brings together everything we know to help you achieve a goal or ambition.

Let’s assume you’ve got your Challenge Mindset (Courage, Clarity and Commitment) in place.

The next step is to get your Environment right.

The Right Environment

Influences

PEOPLE: It’s said we are the product of the 5 people we spend most time with.

Who do you spend most time with?  Has it changed?  Do you need to spend more time with more inspiring people?

Research reveals that one of the most powerful differences between women who reach the top in business and those who don’t is that successful women have a small tight-knit group of women who support each other.

IDEAS: What are you reading? What are you listening to? What are you watching?  What events are you attending?   Get yourself in the right headspace by getting some inspiration.

You don’t have to read whole books – consider Blinkst for example which summarises books for you.  And instead of taking notes of what’s said, just write down what it means you should do differently or carry on doing.

Focus

PHYSICAL SPACE: Where are you working/thinking/planning/acting?

Is it conducive to the best result? If not, then change it. Back yourself and prepare for success.

MENTAL SPACE: What’s distracting you? Don’t let it. Shut the world out for a couple of hours to dedicate yourself to your progress.

Got young children? What about a babysitter once a week for a month? Will it cost you? Yes but will it be worth it (are you worth it)? Of course.

TIME: Haven’t got enough? Join the club. So let’s turn it round. Let’s say you had to find time, where would you find it and how could you ringfence it?

We all have the same number of hours in the day – it’s about what you’re prioritising. One fewer episode of that series? Skip Wordle for a while?

3 TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR ENVIRONMENT

1) Coffee with someone inspiring If you need to start mixing with the right people, or at least with some more interesting people, commit to having coffee (real or virtual) with someone .  You’ll probably find they are starving for inspiration too and you can help each other.

2) Two ways to remove distractions The first is ‘Self Control’ on the Mac which prevents you from opening your list of ‘prohibited’ pages for however long you want.  Impossible to circumvent!  The second is turning off all alerts on your phone and laptop.  This time is for YOU!  and playing sounds on my music streaming service which induce a state of ‘flow’.  This way you can focus quickly and reliably and make the most of your precious time.

3) Two ways to increase focus and productivity    Who knew that a 1950’s Italian kitchen device could give your productivity a boost!  The humble Pomodoro is a tomato-shaped kitchen timer.  You twist the top and it ticks away moving around for the prescribed time and a little alarm goes off when the desired time is reached.   In the world of work, the Pomodoro method is a concentrated way of working.  You choose an amount of time (some people like 25 mins, I like 45), and work for 4 of those with 5 mins break in between.  After that you can have a longer break and then start again.

The second is a discovery of music/sounds on my music streaming service that play at certain frequencies and seem to tune my brain into flow almost immediately.  It’s weird but who am I to question it if it works!
