Maintain Your Desired Behaviours By Making Them Part of Who You Are

Getting started on your new path is actually the easy bit. It’s keeping it going that’s hard.

Marathon runners are particularly grateful for the supporters who cheer them on mid-race, when they’re alone with their aspirations and doubts.

Research shows that creating an identity which supports (or even requires) your desired behaviours is a great way to maintain those behaviours.

I’m the sort of person who….. I’m not the sort of person who…. are powerful structures on which to create the outcomes you want.

So when you are struggling, think of who you are. Are you the sort of person who gives up when it gets too hard (or too boring!)?

Or are you a true leader, who wouldn’t consider giving up, because it’s part of who they are?

What is part of your identity that helps you deliver the behaviours you need to reach your goal? How can you strengthen that belief in yourself as that identity?
