3 Top Tips to Rein In Your Perfectionism

Perfectionism causes stagnation in the individual, their team and the company. Here are 3 safe ways to start to turn the perfectionism ship around and begin growing.

All self-development is rooted in self-awareness and commitment. Look objectively at how you spend your time.

1. Consider what, at your pay level, is the best use of your time today – seeing as you are trying to increase company profit.

If you have 30 minutes, are you better off checking 3 times for typos or making a call to a client? Be brave. Check yourself. Work at the top of your game.

2. Learn to delegate safely. If you don’t brief properly and have planned check-ins it IS likely to come crashing down around your ears. But it doesn’t have to be like that.

Delegate responsibility for outcomes, not tasks. If you’re a team leader, have the team run the project and call you in as needed rather than the other way round. Give them ownership, they’ll step up.

3. Be honest about why you’re not delegating absolutely everything you can. Is any of it because you are avoiding the work at the top of your pay grade and making your day easier?

Get some training, coaching or support for the part of your job you’re anxious about.

And if you are a people-pleaser, giving your self-worth to random strangers to look after, start planning how to take it back and own it.

Others will be careless with it. It’s not as precious to anyone else as it is to you.
