Some of us seem to be naturally dependable. Others of us love a challenge to rise to and can reach great heights when the pressure’s on. But when the heat’s off, the real challenge begins.
Can we keep it up?
To be fully trustworthy is to be fully dependable. To deliver to the same standard time after time, whether the spotlight is on us or not.
Those of us attracted to bright lights and heroic moments may find we have a weak spot here, but it’s something we need to work on. When we excel once or twice, we position ourselves at a high level of delivery.
But when we don’t reach those heights afterwards, there is a sense of loss, even betrayal from teammates and stakeholders. They trusted us and we let them down.
That sense of loss is powerful and can take a lot of work to rectify. People don’t trust us again easily.
One of the best ways to ensure you can be dependable is not to over-promise. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and promise what we WANT to deliver rather than what we KNOW we can deliver. Let’s work to maintain trust by managing our OWN expectations.
